13.03.00 - SUPPORTING SEAFOOD @ FLEECE AND FIRKIN
(BRISTOL)
Right then. My first ever Wilt gig, I had only been
waiting about 2 years for this moment, from the time I had first heard about Wilt being
formed!
I was happily surprised to find people at the gig who were actually Wilt fans! And they
had only come down for the gig to see Wilt! The first band 'Turn' were the other Irish
band supporting Seafood on this tour. They came across as an OK band, although they seemed
to have too many quiet bits for my liking. The thing that did stick in my mind the most
though, was that the female keyboard player (who didn't actually seem to do much) had a
striking resemblance to a friend of mine, so much so that she had to go closer to the
front to have a look for herself!
When Wilt finally came on I was in total awe, as for the first time in my life I was
looking at two people who were in one of my most favourite bands of all time. Wilt
launched into 'It's All Over Now', quickly followed by 'Working For The Man', but
unfortunately the crowd stayed completely stationary which put a damper on my excitement.
I still enjoyed Wilt all the same even though at that point the album wasn't out, so half
of the songs were new to me! Wilt seemed to go down relatively well, although apparently
there was a heckler. It could not have been anything serious as I didn't even know that
there was any crowd problems of that kind! The only crowd problem as I saw it was getting
them to be converted to like Wilt, which I would like to think was solved after that
evening.
The only other crowd problem that I recall, was a girl who had sat on the edge of the
stage patiently waiting for Seafood, but with her BACK to Wilt! When 'I Want It All' was
started, Cormac cunningly changed the beginning lyric: 'Hey can you touch me now? My only
friend, wasted all the time I could spend" to: "Hey you sitting on the stage.
Can you please, get off it now? (or something to that effect!) The girl eventually
realised that she was the one Cormac was singing to and literally sprang off in fright!
(although I hasten to add that Cormac meant it in the nicest way, and she eventually
appreciated that was the case).
After Wilt had finished I hurried off with the other Wilt fans to get our stuff signed
which they did, although they were surprised to have fans this early on! It was it this
point that the other fans noticed that I even had the first single 'No Worries' which was
released on limited edition only. Unfortunately, after speaking to them for a bit, I
discovered that that second single 'It's All Over Now' that I had on promo, was released
as a single with a b-side (Never Enough) which I didn't have! Fortunately though one of
the fans told me where I could it for £1.99, which I did the next day!
The very rushed, hand-written set list,
recycling a bit of a Muse poster!
In summary then, Wilt were good, and I was very glad
that I saw them. However, an album sure wouldn't go amiss! |
